WELCOME TO THE INDIGENOUS HEALTH RESEARCH

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER NETWORK

Who We Are

The Indigenous Health Research Knowledge Transfer Network (IHRKTN) is an extension of the Indigenous Health Research Development Program (IHRDP). The IHRDP is focused on developing a cadre (or core group) of researchers, community organizations, policy-makers and community members interested in Aboriginal health in Ontario. Our program recognizes the diversity of Indigenous cultures and peoples in Ontario, both on and off reserve. We are interested in fostering the development of Inuit, Métis, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students in Ontario who are currently engaged in Aboriginal research.

The Indigenous Health Research Development Program was established in April 2003 and is a jointly awarded project between McMaster University and the University of Toronto. The IHRDP is one of eight Aboriginal Capacity and Development Research Environments (ACADRE) centres in Canada. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has committed $12 million to fund ACADRE centre projects that assist Aboriginal communities in focusing on causes of Aboriginal health problems.

As an ACADRE we have developed several initiatives and conducted various projects in the area of Aboriginal health. Having recently completed an ethical guideline for Aboriginal health research we now turn to the emerging field of Knowledge Transfer.

We are working toward the development of an Ontario network for Aboriginal health knowledge transfer and the continued training of Indigenous students and scholars in KT actvities.

We are firmly dedicated to the principles of Indigneous Knowledge (IK) and the ethical guidelines that emerge from them. It is our hope that the KT network will provide a forum in which researchers, scholars, communities and organziations can begin to develop an open and inclusive community in which Aboriginal health can be fully explored.
