I supervise graduate students in Buddhist Studies in general and the study of Indian Buddhism in particular. My main area of research interest is Buddhist monastic law codes (Vinaya) preserved in Sanskrit, Pāli, Tibetan, and Chinese. In addition to traditional sources such as canonical Buddhist texts, I am interested in using Sanskrit drama, epigraphical materials, travel accounts, art-historical, and archaeological materials to try to better understand Indian Buddhist monasticism as it played out on the ground sometime around the turn of the Common Era. Students who are interested in graduate work in Buddhism at McMaster should have strong language skills and an academic background in the histories, literatures and cultures of Asia. Prospective students in Indian Buddhism (and Buddhist Studies in general) are encouraged to contact me directly by e-mail. For further details, please also see this webpage. インド仏教史及び律の研究をしたい学生は、ご一報ください。修士課程・博士課程の大学院生随時募集中。海外留学生のための奨学金制度実施中。詳しくはご連絡下さい。 Please also note the webpages of my colleagues, Dr. James Benn (Chinese Buddhism and Chinese religions) and Dr. Mark Rowe (Japanese Buddhism and Japanese religions).
